Enrichment Guides

To aid teachers in extending their students' learning beyond their trip to the theater, the Theater in Education department offers workshops and enrichment materials that suggest possible themes and curriculum connections through which teachers can create fully integrated units. In addition, the education programs and enrichment materials for our season are designed to help teachers and students address the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction Standards as well as the National Standards for Theatre Education.

A field trip to see a play at First Stage can be an ideal springboard for learning across the curriculum. Along with the specific themes and connections suggested for each play in this guide, all of the plays provide students and teachers with opportunities to explore and build key life skills.

Some skills include:
• Ability to think
• Problem solving
• Informed decision-making
• Critical, creative, and analytical thinking
• Imagining places, times, and situations different than one's own
• Skills in communication
• Communicating with a variety of tools and skills
• Working effectively in groups
• Connections with community
• Recognizing and acting on responsibilities as a citizen
• Contributing to the aesthetic and cultural life of the community
• Preparing for work and lifelong learning
• Production of quality work
• Creating quality products and performances
• Revising products and performances
• Developing and pursuing positive goals

Extensive enrichment guides are created for each production. Each guide contains: a synopsis, vocabulary list, background information about the play and the production approach, suggested activities to connect to other curriculum areas, theater activities, student handouts, recommended additional reading, discussion questions-all designed to help teachers and students prepare for and reflect upon their visit to the theater.
Enrichment guides are available one month prior to the opening of each specific production.
