What is Young Company? Simply put, Young Company is the advanced, college level actor training program at First Stage Theater Academy. Accepted students will complete course work with John Maclay, Todd Denning, Matt Daniels and special guest artists on Saturdays (9:30-12:15) when School year Academy is in session. The 2011-2012 dates are:
Fall: October 1-November 19, 2011
Winter: January 21-March 10, 2012
Spring: March 24-May 19, 2012 (no class April 7)
How do I audition? Auditions will be held on Wednesday and Thursday, September 7 and 8 from 4-7pm. Time slots are available every 15 minutes. The audition requirement is two contrasting monologues, one classical and one contemporary, not to exceed three minutes combined length. There will also be an interview and the directors may want to work with the auditionee on the piece.
How much does it cost? Tuition for the course is $550 plus a $40 production fee. This covers the entire year and all supplies. Financial assistance is available to any families who find the tuition a barrier to participation. YC members may also defray the cost by interning other classes for which they will receive $50 tuition credits for each course interned.
What are the performance opportunities? The YC produces three shows a year in the Youth Arts Hall at the Milwaukee Youth Arts Center, one in December, one in March and one in May. This year’s shows will be (subject to availability of rights):
December 9-10: INTO THE WOODS by Stephen Sondheim, directed by Katie Cummings
March 9-11: THE WINTER’S TALE by William Shakespeare, directed by Todd Denning
May 4-5: ROSENCRANTZ AND GUILDENSTERN ARE DEAD by Tom Stoppard, Director TBA
Participation in these shows is not required. Auditions dates will be announced once the final company is assembled.
What if I have to miss class? We recognize how busy a student’s life can be during the school year and therefore offer some flexibility regarding attendance. We do, however require that all conflicts be submitted in advance and in writing and that all work is completed.
When will I found out if I am accepted? We hope to make final decisions by September 10th.
