Young Company

Young CompanyFirst Stage Young Company, the Theater Academy’s award-winning training program for advanced high school actors is open to students who want to take their work to the next level. Accepted students will complete college and graduate-level training in Acting, Voice, Movement, and Shakespeare as well as electives ranging from Auditioning to Stage Combat to Dialects. Traditionally, the Young Company hosts master classes with guest artists from across the nation, produces a season of three plays, and facilitates special excursions to the Utah Shakespeare Festival and American Players Theater.

Class meets 9:30a-12:15p Saturdays throughout the school year with additional workshops and rehearsals scheduled separately.

COVID-19 Protocols

As with other theaters and training programs across the country, we have been affected by the pandemic. Our third term of class was conducted remotely in 2020, and our sleep-away programs have been transformed to at-home experiences this year, but we look forward to safely returning to normal activities as soon as we are able.

We have been taking in and implementing measures to ensure the health and safety of our students, families, and staff, in order to continue to provide high-impact theater arts training for young people. Our decisions have been guided by CDC and MPS recommendations, state and local government requirements and protocols, and listening to the needs of our staff and the families that we serve. We have been extra careful and not only met recommendations and guidelines, but often exceeded them. To that end, we don't know what the school year will look like yet, but are prepared to pivot quickly from in-person class to a virtual/remote format if need be. We have been meeting the challenges of this age head-on: last year's Company was buoyed by our online programming starting in March, and we have no intention of letting you down. For now, we'll all have to be nimble as we navigate these uncharted waters. Accordingly, information about whether auditions will be live or via Zoom will come in August.

YOUNG COMPANY PERFORMANCE PROJECTS

Young Company Performance Projects are actor-driven presentations using elemental production values. By stripping down to a nearly bare stage, the connection of actor to audience is enhanced, and the words of the play come alive in exciting ways, allowing our award-winning students to showcase their graduate level skills with full length material, from Shakespeare to American classics to pieces commissioned specially for them.
